JCC offering support for distance learning and reworked after school care due to COVID-19

The JCC of Syracuse has changed up its school-age childcare this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. It has created programs to accommodate the distance learning and after school needs of Jamesville-DeWitt Schools students and the after school needs of Syracuse Hebrew Day School students.

The JCC's new Club J All Day program offers support for distance learning onsite at the JCC from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. four days a week for J-D students in grades 2–6. Students in Club J will be provided socially distanced work spaces and Internet access to attend class virtually. Two Club J sessions—each meeting two days a week with no overlapping days across the two sessions—are offered each week to coincide with J-D's distance learning schedule. See the table on this flyer (PDF, 569 KB).

Club J students must bring their own laptops/tablets and any other required distance learning materials. JCC staff are not certified teachers and will supervise and assist the children with distance learning activities but not with curriculum.

The cost to attend Club J is $650 per month. To add two days of After School care each week brings the cost to $800 per month. The program will start on Sept. 8 with recreational activities for the children. Support for distance learning will begin the week of Sept. 14 to coincide with the start of J-D’s in-person instruction.

After School care at the JCC this coming school year will offer a variety of engaging activities for J-D Schools and SHDS students in grades K–6. The program will run Monday–Friday from 3–5:30 p.m. Students from the different schools will be kept from co-mingling. The cost to attend five days a week is $325 per month and to attend two days a week costs $150 per month. The program starts on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Students in Club J and After School care must wear a mask/cloth face covering whenever social distancing is not possible. Because of this year's extraordinary circumstances, current JCC family membership is required to register your child for Club J and After School care. Non-members may join the JCC now in order to register their children.

The JCC has a proven track record of safely reopening children's programming in the midst of the pandemic this year. Its Jerome and Phyllis Charney Early Childhood Development Program successfully opened for four weeks in June and the Camp Joe & Lynne Romano summer day camp successfully opened for seven weeks in July and August. Club J and After School student groups will be kept small, separated, following a set schedule and paired with the same staff. All CDC and New York State health and safety guidelines will be strictly followed.
