The Syracuse Jewish Genealogy group will hold its next meeting on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center, 5655 Thompson Rd., DeWitt. It will feature guest speaker Steven Sisskind, owner of Sisskind Funeral Service. The event is free and open to the public.

Sisskind will present information on the various cemeteries in the Syracuse area and how cemeteries and their records can inform us on genealogy. Sisskind will be joined by Bill Birenstein, who also possesses a wealth of knowledge on the topic.

As a funeral director, Sisskind has served the Syracuse Jewish community for more than 30 years. He is also president of the JCC of Syracuse board of directors.

This will be the second meeting of the current Jewish year, as the group met in October and welcomed guest speaker Jay Sage, VP at International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies, Inc (IAJGS). He spoke on DNA research and its link to genealogy. The meeting attracted a very good turnout.

Come and introduce yourself to the Syracuse Jewish Genealogy group's steering committee members: Mike Fixler, Yonat Klein, Ken Brynien, Barbara Walzer and Carolyn Surine. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome! For more information, email Mike Fixler at
