JCC Welcomes new Director of Community Programming!

The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse is pleased to welcome Raven DiSalvo-Hess as the head of their new Community Programming department.

Previously the Arts & Culture Manager at the Mandel JCC of the Palm Beaches for 3 years, Ms. DiSalvo-Hess has conceived and run dozens of book, educational and film events. With an academic background in literature and fine arts, and a personal interest in pop culture, music, theater and dance, DiSalvo-Hess said she is “looking forward to bringing community members of all different ages and demographics together by offering a variety of programs and events.”

Summer programming includes movie screenings, book events and game nights.  Game events will initially feature board games and deck building games, but DiSalvo-Hess says, “As we build our community programming, we hope to bring mahjong, bridge and chess lessons to the JCC, offering opportunities for regular play, and eventually hosting tournaments.” In August the JCC will welcome Alan Shore for a presentation and Q&A on his forthcoming non-fiction book, Uncommon Allies: American Jews and Christians Uniting against Hitler, 1933-1945.

The Community Programming department will offer a range of events that appeal to the Jewish community as well as the overall Syracuse-area community, creating a space where individuals can make friends, learn something new or engage in an educational lecture.

Don’t miss the JCC of Syracuse’s new Community Programming – kicking off with a Book Swap on Thursday, May 23, 6:30-8 pm. Leave the kids at home and grab 3-5 books you’re looking to rehome. Then swap them as you mingle with fellow book lovers and find new books for your TBR pile. On Sunday, May 26, 1-3 pm we have another book swap that is family friendly! Grab some books and the kids, and head to the JCC to refresh your and your kids’  books for the summer. (Don’t worry, even if you don’t have children, you can still come on Sunday!)
Let the Games Begin! Love board, deck and card games? We have a series of events for you! Beginning on Thursday May 30, 6:30-8 pm, the JCC will host four game events between May and August. Bring your friends, or get ready to make new ones. Each event will provide a mix of classic games and new favorites – plus, every month will feature a different game you can learn how to play from scratch.
Looking for some quiet time to read without disruption? Join us for a Silent Book Club on Sunday, June 23, 1-3 pm. Bring your own book or grab one of ours, and settle in for a quiet, uninterrupted hour of reading. Then take the second hour to mingle with your fellow readers and see what everyone else has been reading!
Save the Dates for our parent/young adult reader book clubs in July. Whether you’re a parent, guardian, aunt, uncle, older sibling, etc., you and the pre-teen and teen are invited to these events. We’ll be releasing our books selections soon, but in the meantime mark the following dates on your calendar:
Suggested for reader 11+ — Sunday, July 21, 1-3 pm
Suggested for readers 15+ — Thursday, July 25th, 6:30-8 pm
More of a movie person? Don’t worry, starting in August and going until the end of 2024, the JCC will begin having Movie Screenings monthly. Whether it’s an old favorite or a cult classic, we’ll have something for everyone. Stay tuned for more details!
