Children’s Sports Classes (Classes for Kids)

Our mission is to teach physical education, teamwork, sportsmanship and cooperation to kids from Pre-K to Pre-Teen.

We offer a variety of sports classes for preschool through school-age children. Classes are designed to get kids moving and having fun! Busing for school-age children attending classes is available from F-M schools and all public schools within the Jamesville-DeWitt School District. Enrollment is open to the community and JCC membership is not required, however enrollment is discounted for members.

Sports & Fitness

Karate, fitness, ninja warriors, and rookie sports make up the children’s classes offered at the JCC through the Health, Physical Education & Recreation Department.

The JCC School of Dance

Ballet, Tap, and Jazz form the curriculum of the JCC Dance Program. Girls and boys are invited to participate in this program and gain flexibility, strength, and coordination while having lots of fun. Dance classes are held in the dance aerobic studio, with mirrors, dance bars, and wood flooring. The program includes a recital in June with additional fees for costumes.

The JCC Gymnastics School

The JCC gymnastics school offers a comprehensive regimen of gymnastics instruction. Students develop agility, flexibility, and self-confidence. Classes are taught by Sherri Lamanna. Placement is based on skill, not age.

We take the child who may not be the next Mary Lou Retton, but we make them feel like star.

Sports

The JCC’s popular sports programs for kids teach skills, conditioning, team work, fair-play and sportsmanship.

Gymnastics

The JCC gymnastics school offers a comprehensive regimen of gymnastics instruction from beginners to Level 7 advanced gymnasts. Coach Sherri Lamanna works with students to develop agility, flexibility, and self-confidence. Placement is based on skill, not age. For those little gymnasts not quite ready for a children’s gymnastics class, the JCC offers preschool gymnastics classes specially designed for three- to five-year olds.

Students start their gymnastics classes as a beginner which has three different levels. There are also pre-team levels available, level 3 and level 4.  Upon mastering skills at the pre-team level, gymnasts will be placed in team levels which are levels five through seven. Team level gymnasts compete in local non sanctioned meets. Past classes have traveled to Cortland and Auburn to compete in invitational meets. The JCC gymnastics programs focus on fun while developing essential competition skills.

Among the highly specialized equipment available at the JCC, the gymnastics department has recently acquired a new tumble track for tumbling.

Gymnastics classes at the JCC are convenient for parents as well. Bussing is available from some city schools, select private schools, and all public schools within the Jamesville-Dewitt school district.

Coach Lamanna’s experience and instruction will make your child’s gymnastics experience an unforgettable one. Classes are structured according to health and safety guidelines and level placement is based on skill, not age.

Karate

Participants learn basic strokes, proper footwork, form and lateral movement drills. Enthusiasm for the sport is emphasized along with fun, fitness and sportsmanship.

School of Dance

The JCC offers classes for both the novice and experienced dancer.

The Ballet program teaches children from their early ages in
Pre-Ballet and Budding Ballerinas programs. Pre-Ballet is an introductory program for preschool aged children which introduces them to ballet techniques and terminology. After mastering Pre-Ballet, children in Kindergarten and beyond move on to become Budding Ballerinas. This program is more advanced than the Pre-Ballet program, but still full of fun. Classes are open to boys and girls. The dress code for boys in both programs is shorts and a T-shirt. Girls are to wear a leotard and tights. All children are required to wear Ballet shoes.

Boys and Girls are invited to participate in this program and gain flexibility, strength, coordination, and style while having lots of fun. Dance classes will be held in the dance aerobic studio with mirrors, dance bars, and wood flooring. The program includes a recital in June. Additional fees apply for costumes.

Getting children involved in physical activities at such an early age plays a crucial role in building confidence and self-esteem. Your child will learn to follow instruction, improve coordination, and experience the health benefits of physical activity. For more information please contact the JCC of Syracuse at 234-4522.
