The JCC Fitness Center’s Indoor workout facilities are open to members and guests for in-person workouts, group exercise classes, and personal training!
Use the JCC main entrance when you come to the Fitness Center. The Fitness entrance will remain closed until further notice. When entering the JCC we will ask you some basic health screening questions. If you are sick, feel ill or have symptoms of COVID-19, please do not come to the JCC.

Our Mission

The JCC of Syracuse understands the importance of regular exercise in leading a healthy lifestyle. From personal training to focusing on the special needs of senior adults, the JCC is dedicated to keeping you in shape physically, mentally and emotionally. Our staff will be sure to make your exercise program enjoyable by incorporating fun activities into all exercise classes. The JCC is the place to be for fun, friends and fitness! Our state-of-the-art Neulander Family Sports & Fitness Center offers something for everyone.

Adult group exercise classes offer a variety of activities from aerobics to yoga, and everything in between. Our instructors understand the differing needs of men and women and formulate their classes accordingly. We offer different levels from beginner to advanced and several times to choose from. Schedules are designed to accommodate nearly every lifestyle.

Seniors will be delighted by the number of classes offered at the JCC. Our instructors are aware of the special needs of seniors and develop their routines respectively. Great care is taken during classes to ensure the safety and comfort of our senior class participants. Instructors are available to assist seniors with routines and are vigilant of signs of fatigue or overexertion and respond appropriately. Seniors will find classes at the JCC not only enjoyable but social as well.

Our personal trainers will work with you either through a semi-private or private lesson. Before starting your exercise program, our trainers will fill out a thorough health evaluation and get information pertinent to a proper exercise program. They will discuss specific goals, limitations and exercise preferences when creating your program.

The JCC Sports & Fitness Center includes the Schayes Family Gymnasium with an elevated and banked running/walking track, runners stretching area, collegiate/professional competition length basketball court, two cross courts, volleyball and badminton courts, and bleacher area.

We offer a variety of Full-Facility (Fitness) membership plans.

Gym Schedule

JCC of Syracuse Schayes Family Gymnasium Schedule

Our Schayes Family Gym hosts a variety of fitness programs and events for JCC members and the local community. The gym features a collegiate-size basketball court, two cross courts, volleyball and badminton courts and bleacher area. In addition to scheduled programs for members, the JCC rents the gym to outside groups on a space available basis.

Calendar Legend

Open Gym – For JCC fitness members only. Guests are welcome when accompanied by a member; cost is $5 per guest.

Family Gym – Free for JCC fitness members; cost for non-members is $5 per child ($10 per family maximum).

Members Basketball – Free for JCC fitness members; cost for non-members is $75 1-day/week, $110 2-days/week.

Group Exercise Classes

  • All classes are free for Fitness members (except Tap and Ballroom Dance when we are able to offer them again).
  • $10 per class for non-Fitness members, 15$ for TRX.
  • All classes are 45 minutes long
  • Reservations are no longer required!
  • SOME CLASSES ALSO AVAILABLE VIA ZOOM: If you would like to attend the class via Zoom, please register for the Zoom class to receive the link to attend remotely. Once you submit your registration you will receive a confirmation email with the Zoom link.
  • Please bring your own yoga mat and related equipment where applicable. Some equipment such as weights will be available to borrow on a first come, first served basis.
  • The JCC will have hand sanitizer, disinfectant spray and paper towels available.

Pickleball at the JCC

The JCC’s Sports & Fitness Center features one indoor pickleball court for use during the winter and two outdoor courts (open weather permitting).

Come play pickup pickleball at the JCC Tuesday & Wednesday evenings 6 PM – 8 PM.

Pickleball is FREE for JCC fitness members, $10 per night for non-members. 

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America. What’s pickleball? It’s a racquet sport that is a combination of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s suitable for all ages, all fitness levels and all skill levels. And, you can now play pickleball at the Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse in DeWitt.

“We are excited to offer Pickleball to our members and the community alike,” said Patrick Scott, JCC sports & fitness director. “Pickleball is an exciting, fast-paced game that’s a lot of fun and great exercise, and it’s just starting to become popular in this area. Bringing pickleball play indoors here at the JCC is very convenient for those who want to continue playing all winter long.”

Pickleball was born more than 50 years ago by some friends in Washington state who didn’t have the right equipment to play badminton. The game can be played as singles or doubles on a court similar in size to a badminton court with a slightly modified tennis net. Besides the court, the only other equipment required is paddles similar to ping pong paddles and a ball similar to a wiffleball. Pickleball is easy to learn and has been called “addictive” by those who regularly play. It’s a game of finesse, precision and thinking, making it a level playing field for all ages to compete against each other.

Adult Tap Dance classes

Class is in session! From October 11th to December 21st!

Adult Tap Dance Classes are back! Beginning October 11th the JCC’s Neulander Family Sports & Fitness Center will hold weekly classes! On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, beginning at 6:30 pm at the Center on 5655 Thompson Rd. in DeWitt.

Our beginners classes, taught by Angela Saturno is Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 pm. The Intermediate classes, also taught by Angela will begin Wednesdays from 8 to 9 pm. On Tuesdays, we will have an advanced class taught by longtime JCC tap instructor Barry Shulman. This class will be 6:30 to 8 pm. The cost is $5 per person each night. A limited number Tap shoes are available on a first come first serve basis. The classes are scheduled to run through until December 21st.

Maximum 25 people per class and registration is required for every class meeting. To register, contact 315-445-2040 or email [email protected].

The Beginner class is for newcomers and teaches steps like shuffle/ball change and easy dances such as the Waltz Clog/Soft Shoe and Military Tap. Intermediate Tap is for learning combinations like shim sham, time steps and more complicated soft shoe. Advanced Tap is for learning at a faster and more complex pace, the deconstruction and reconstruction of combinations.

All classes are taught “New York City” style. Students do not need to commit to every class and can attend as much as they’d like. A limited number of tap shoes are available to borrow at no cost each night on a first come, first served basis.

The JCC’s Tap classes are open to anyone age 12 and older. No prior dance experience is necessary. Maximum 25 people per class and registration is required for every class meeting by calling 315-445-2360. Plenty of free parking is available. Tappers are asked to arrive early to sign in.

Shulman, a local attorney and choreographer, has held Tap classes at the JCC for many years. He’s a partner with the law firm Mackenzie Hughes LLP, and has taught principal dancers on Broadway and with national tours. Shulman received the JCC’s Kovod Gadol award in 2014 for his extraordinary commitment, energy and loyalty to the Center.

Saturno is a native of Syracuse and studied at the Center of Ballet & Dance Arts under the direction of Deborah Boughton. She taught dance as an adjunct Professor of Dance at Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ. She’s been teaching for 35 years and has judged numerous dance competitions. Saturno received a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY Geneseo and has a Master’s degree in Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis from The Sage Colleges (MS). She is currently the director of ABA and School Consultation Services at The Kelberman Center.
