Get a taste of what working with a personal trainer can look like with this month’s spotlight of the JCC’s newest personal trainer Suellen Simmons.

What sparked your love of fitness?

Simmons: I fell in love with fitness when I joined track and field in the seventh grade. I joined my first gym at 19 and began my lifting journey. All this came to a halt when I had kids, but I learned a lot about diet because I became insulin resistant after giving birth, which resulted in me struggling to lose 60 pounds, suffering from ligament issues, and nearly diabetic. Fast forward, I’ve reversed a lot of these issues through diet, dropped the weight and am active again. I’ve run multiple half marathons, completed Spartan Races, and more. I got into personal training about a year ago and started at the JCC in April.

Youth Athletics Program at the JCC to offer Exciting Opportunities!

The JCC’s exciting Youth Athletics program offers children the opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled fall. These classes provide numerous benefits, from improving health and fitness to forming new social connections.

Classes are open to the entire community and begin Monday, Sept. 9. Classes cater to children from preschool age through school age, and convenient before class care options are available. Transportation is also available for children in the F-M schools, all public schools within the Jamesville-DeWitt School Districts, and the Ed Smith School

“Sports offer children incredibly valuable lessons and opportunities to grow,” said Sherri Lamanna, director of gymnastics, dance, and the Early Childhood Development Programs (ECDP) physical education. “It helps them develop organization skills, teaches them how to stick to schedules, fosters sportsmanship, and so much more.”

Here’s a list of Youth Athletics’ offerings:

Gymnastics

Children of all levels are welcome to learn the foundations of gymnastics, including floor, beam, bars, and vault. For more advanced gymnasts, the JCC also offers Team/Pre-Team Gymnastics which athletes are required to try out for or gain approval from a coach to join. Furthermore, the team competes against other local programs.

Tumbling Tots

Tumbling Tots is the JCC’s pre-gymnastics class for 3-year-olds. Children learn the basics of beam, bars, and tumble tracks.

Dance Program

Children of all ages can choose from a variety of dance classes including ballet, tap, jazz, and pre-ballet, for the youngest dancers. Dance classes allow children to express themselves in a unique way while working on flexibility, strength, and coordination.

Karate

Children will kick into action in this program by learning the beginning ranks of CNY Karate Goju Ryu style. Offering a mix of hard and soft techniques, these Karate classes allow children to work on their fine motor skills and self-discipline.

Ninja Warrior

Like the popular competition show, Ninja Warrior classes put children’s skills to the test through the JCC’s obstacle course. Participants will work on their strength, agility, and problem-solving by jumping, swinging, climbing, and more.

Rookie Sports

Fun and sportsmanship are at the center of Rookie Sports. Children enhance their fine motor skills by practicing throwing, catching, kicking, and running.

Sign Up For Personal Training at the JCC

By Carlett Spike

It’s always the right time to commit to health and fitness. At the JCC in addition to a variety of exercise classes offered at the Fitness Center, there are also personal trainers available to help individuals set and reach their goals.

Full-time Trainer Will Masiclat is the first point of contact for new members as he facilitates orientations for the Fitness Center and sets individuals up with a personal trainer. Masiclat, who has been with the JCC since 2017 and was named personal trainer coordinator in 2022, specializes in TRX classes and works with clients in both the weight room and on the Pilates Reformer. Though his current availability for one-on-one training is limited, there are plenty of opportunities to work with him by taking one of his TRX classes.

Whether a gym regular or a beginner, the fitness team is excited to work with any clients on their fitness journey. “We really focus on functionality and improving quality of life over purely aesthetic goals,” Masiclat said.

Learn more about the trainers at the JCC:

Eileen Cole teaches Pilates and has been working with the JCC for more than seven years. She brings a wealth of experience in physical therapy through her work with Veteran Affairs. Clients report feeling leaner, stronger, and taller after a period of taking Pilates, and they notice improved core strength and less pain, Cole said. “It’s a great workout,” she added. “I really believe in Pilates and I think it does a wealth of good for anybody.”

Larry Baiz has been a personal trainer for more than 20 years and is open to working with anyone. A competitive natural bodybuilder since 1985 and winner of multiple ANBF Kings Cup Nationals Pro competitions, Baiz encourages clients to lift weights to strengthen their bodies and see results. “I will push you,” Baiz said. “My goal is to bring out your highest capabilities and potential.” In addition to training, Baiz can offer nutritional advice.

Sue Lowitz has been a Pilates instructor since 2012 and she teaches Pilates classes at the JCC Monday-Wednesday. She also offers private and semi-private lessons using the Pilates Reformer which offers a full-body workout and challenges clients to focus on the mind-body connection. “Everybody wants to be flexible and more in tune with their bodies,” Lowitz said. “Pilates helps increase flexibility, it teaches you how to heal from an injury, and to listen to your body.”

Joe Yager has been a personal trainer with the JCC for over 20 years. He’s trained a wide variety of clients over the years, from teens to seniors (his oldest client is 104!). Yager can fully customize the personal training experience for each client based on his or her needs — including tracking metrics and helping with nutrition. “I hold my clients accountable,” Yager said. Past clients have appreciated his ability to keep them on track so they achieve their goals, he added.

Anne Hughes specializes in corrective exercises, which encompasses a handful of elements including stability, alignment, and muscle function. Hughes mostly works with clients who are 55 and older. “I like doing things step by step, seeing people progress and see improvements that make their lives better,” Hughes said. “That’s a big reward to me.” She’s been a trainer with the JCC for more than two years.

Personal and small group training options are available. Each trainer’s availability is flexible to meet client needs. For more information and to sign up for personal training at the JCC email [email protected]

The collection includes several hundred books on history, biography, essays, fiction and poetry provided by Goldberg. “We are beyond thrilled and honored that Alan has chosen the JCC to house this incredible library of books,” said Marci Erlebacher, executive director of the JCC. “We hope that this can be a resource to many across the Central New York community.”

Sherri Lamanna has worked at the JCC for 24 years. She is excited to work with the new fitness team. “I believe we all have a lot to bring to the table to make a great fitness experience for both new and existing members.” Sherri will now oversee rentals and scheduling for the gymnasium.

Paula Pacini, is constantly looking for new and improved classes to help enhance the member experience at the JCC. “I would like to have better communication with our members about what we have to offer at the JCC and help spread the word to potential members on what classes and services we provide.”
